１０月１８日、横手市立橫手北小学校（５年児童５２人）で稲刈り体験が行われました。６月にみんなで植えた「あきたこまち」の苗は大きく成長し、まぶしいくらいの黄金色に輝いていました。

On October 18th, a rice harvest event was held at Yokotekita Elementary School in Yokote City. 52 fifth graders joined the event. The Akitakomachi (Akita’s signature rice brand) was planted as young seedlings back in June. Now they have grown so big with its ears shining brightly in golden hue.

はじめに学校田をサポートしている橫手地域資源保全隊の方から鎌の持ち方、刈り方などを学び、それから全員横に並んで稲刈り開始です。最初は鎌を上手く使えず四苦八苦していましたが、次第に慣れみんなで競争しながらあっという間に一枚の田んぼを刈り取ることができました。毎日食べているお米は、半年かけてこうして出来上がることを体験した貴重な一日でした。

First, members of the Yokote Area Natural Resource Conservation Corp held a demonstration on things like how to hold a sickle and use it to reap the ears of rice. Now all the students stood in a line side by side, and it’s their turn to give it a try. Handling the sickles seemed to be a bit of struggle for them in the beginning, but they soon got the hang of it, even competed with one another, and finished the whole field in no time. They had a precious experience, in which they learned that the rice they eat every day comes from this strenuous efforts of 6 months.
